The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team enters the Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championship presented by VisitMyrtleBeach.com as the No. 4 seed where it will take on No. 5 seed Austin Peay on Thursday, March 2. Tipoff from historic Municipal Auditorium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Skyhawks (11-18, 8-8 OVC) enter the league’s premiere four-day event looking to make notch its fifth OVC Basketball Championship title in the past seven years after falling short the past two seasons. UT Martin will look to ride its three All-OVC honorees in Kendall Spray, Myah Taylor and Ashton Feldhaus who each earned second team honors. Spray also picked up OVC Freshman of the Year honors after leading the squad in scoring with 12.7 points per game while ranking 16th nationally in three-pointers made with 87. The duo of Taylor (12.5 ppg) and Feldhaus (11.4 ppg) are also joined in double figures by Emanye Robertson (10.2 ppg).
UT Martin returns to the tournament field for the eighth consecutive season under head coach Kevin McMillan who have never appeared lower than a four-seed during his tenure. The Skyhawks are 12-3 under McMillan in OVC Basketball Championship play while posting an 11-2 record in games play at Municipal Auditorium. A three-time OVC Coach of the Year recipient, McMillan ranks fifth on the OVC’s all-time wins leaderboard with a 152-101 career record while notching an impressive 101-31 mark in league play.
Austin Peay (14-15, 8-8 OVC) enters the Championship field on a hot streak after keeping its season along with a pair of much needed victories over UT Martin and Southeast Missouri on the final week of the regular season. The Governors boast OVC Player of the Year Tearra Banks who averaged 19.3 points and 8.0 rebounds in just 24.7 minutes per game – posting the highest efficiency ranking in the conference.
Thursday’s matchup marks the 85th meeting between the two programs with Austin Peay holding a 45-39 series advantage. Despite splitting the season series, UT Martin has won 10 of its last 12 meetings against Austin Peay dating back to 2012. In the teams’ first matchup on Jan. 25, UT Martin picked up an 83-80 victory before Austin Peay posted a dominating victory on its home court on Feb. 22 by a final score of 85 -60.
