BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball duo of Janekia Mason and Kendall Spray earned adidas Ohio Valley Conference weekly honors on the final week of the season after a pair of strong performances against Austin Peay and Murray State. Mason earned OVC Newcomer of the Week honors while Spray notched her fifth OVC Freshman of the Week accolade.
A native of Covington, Tenn., Mason notched the best week of her young Skyhawk career by averaging 20 points and six rebounds in the pair of contests. She began her week by briefly setting a new career high with 16 points while tallying five rebounds at Austin Peay. The junior took her game to another level in the regular season finale, posting another career-high with 24 points along with seven rebounds against Murray State – including the go-ahead layup and-one with 23 seconds left which resulted in the victory.
Mason averaged 9.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game while stepping her game up in conference play to 11.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. She has scored in double figures 14 times this season – including eight consecutive games to finish out the regular season. She also notched a pair of double-doubles earlier in the year against Murray State and Southeast Missouri.
A native of Lebanon, Tenn., Spray averaged close to double figures for the week, tallying 8.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. Against Austin Peay, Spray scored eight points while tallying a pair of rebounds. In the regular season finale against Murray State she tallied nine points and four rebounds to complete the week.
Spray has earned OVC Freshman of the Week honors five times this season after averaging 12.7 points per game to lead the squad. Spray broke UT Martin’s freshman single-season three-point record – surpassing Heather Butler’s previous mark of 84. Her 87 three-pointers on the season ranks 16th nationally.
UT Martin will return to action in the OVC Basketball Championship against No. 5 seed Austin Peay on Wednesday, March 1. Tipoff from Municipal Auditorium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
