CARBONDALE, Ill. – Senior Sarah Candeloro extended her perfect singles mark but the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team fell by a 4-2 margin at Southern Illinois this morning.
Candeloro ran her spring singles record to 3-0 today, defeating Xiwei Cai by a 7-6 (5), 6-3 margin at No. 1. The Dover, Del. native also teamed up with Jemima Potter to claim a 6-1 victory over Cai and Ana Sofia Cordero at No. 1.
Burcu Tari collected a singles win at No. 3, turning away Meagan Monaghan by a 6-1, 7-6 (4) margin. However, the Skyhawks (0-3) would not pick up another win throughout the match.
The team of Andrea Plantada Cortes and Asel Jumamukhambetova battled before falling 6-4 at No. 3 doubles before the Salukis claimed the doubles point after a narrow Hitomi Naito/Tari 7-5 setback at No. 2.
In singles action, Naito fell 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 while Potter was defeated by a 6-0, 6-3 margin at No. 6. Southern Illinois clinched the match win with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Plantada Cortes at No. 5 while Jumamukhambetova did not finish her match at No. 4.
The Skyhawks return to action next week with four matches in six days during their annual Spring Break trip. UT Martin begins that stretch with a match at UAB on Saturday, March 4.
