MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin spring golf season opens this weekend when the Skyhawks head to Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz. to take part in the Loyola Intercollegiate for the second straight year.
UT Martin is one of 16 teams in the field, which also features 15 individuals. The Skyhawks will be joined by Air Force, Arkansas State, Connecticut, DePaul, Drake, Eastern Michigan, Elon, Loyola, Missouri State, Murray State, Northern Illinois, Seton Hall, SIUE, St. John’s and Utah Valley in the 54-hole tournament that goes from Saturday, Feb. 25 through Monday, Feb. 27.
The Skyhawks will have a practice day on Friday before being paired with Air Force, DePaul and Connecticut on the first day of the tournament. A shotgun start is scheduled for 7:45 a.m. local time each day as the forecast calls for sunny conditions through the first two rounds before an 80 percent chance of rain on Monday.
Last year at the same event, UT Martin finished fourth out of 17 teams with an 851 (-13). Hunter Richardson shot a 207 (-9) to pace the Skyhawks, tying for fourth out of 104 competitors in the field.
Richardson’s 71.0 scoring average this season ranks second in the Ohio Valley Conference while Austin Swafford’s 72.4 average ranks just outside the league’s top five. Coming off the program’s first-ever OVC championship last season, UT Martin was recently picked to finish third in the league after a 2016 fall that generated a pair of tournament victories and a 290.1 scoring average (second-best mark in the OVC).
