The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will look to continue the squad’s hot start with an appearance at the Chattanooga Frost Classic over the weekend beginning on Friday, Feb. 24 before closing on Sunday, Feb. 26.
The Skyhawks (7-1) return to action against Saint Louis on Friday morning at 10 a.m. before taking on Western Michigan at 12:30 p.m. UT Martin will then take on Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday at 10 a.m. before squaring off against tournament host Chattanooga at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks will conclude their five-game tournament appearance against Northwestern State at 9 a.m. With a perfect weekend in the tournament, UT Martin head coach Donley Canary will notch career victory No. 500.
In the team’s most recent tournament, UT Martin went 4-1 in the Alabama State Black and Gold Tournament. The Skyhawks outscored their opponents 42-15 over the weekend while posting a .447 batting average and 38 RBIs. Once getting on base, the Skyhawks swiped 14 stolen base – pushing their season total up to a OVC-leading 28. Renate Meckl led the Skyhawks with eight base hits on the weekend.
UT Martin currently ranks in the top-25 nationally in nine different categories. The Skyhawks rank second in stolen bases per game (3.5), fourth in on-base percentage (.488), fourth in scoring (9.38), fifth in batting average (.406), sixth in doubles per game (2.25) and 12th in slugging percentage (.590). Individually Jodie Duncan ranks as the toughest to strikeout nationally with zero on the season while Rachel Williams ranks 15th in RBIs (14) and Carly Gonzales ranks 16th in runs per game (1.5).
Meckl leads the team with a .520 batting average with 10 runs, 13 hits and five extra base knocks. Junior Jodie Duncan leads the team with two home runs along with 12 RBIs while Williams paces the squad with 14 RBIs.
Senior righty Brooke Kennedy paces the squad in the circle with a perfect 4-0 mark along with a 3.50 ERA in 24 innings of work. Kennedy has limited opponents to a .213 batting average while striking out 19 in four complete games. Look for Sara Hooten (1-1, 1.27 ERA), Samantha Scott (1-0, 1.62 ERA) and Alyssa Vanlandingham (1-0, 4.04 ERA) to see action inside the circle.
This marks the second consecutive year that the Skyhawks have appeared in the Chattanooga Frost Classic. The Skyhawks hold a 30-35 series advantage against tournament foes Saint Louis (20-21), Western Michigan (1-1), Fairleigh Dickinson (3-0), Chattanooga (5-12) and Northwestern State (1-1).
