MARTIN, Tenn. – After a three-and-a-half month layoff from official competition, the University of Tennessee at Martin rodeo teams resume their seasons with the spring opener at East Mississippi Community College in Meridian, Miss. on Feb. 23-25.

Both teams last competed at Southern Arkansas on Nov. 3-5, rounding out a successful fall slate. Both squads finished in the top-four in all five fall rodeos, including a women’s win at Murray State on Oct. 15-16.

The three-day rodeo at East Mississippi this weekend is the first of five rodeos on the spring docket before the College National Finals Rodeo takes place on June 9-17. The UT Martin men’s team is currently ranked No. 21 nationally with 1,800 points, a tally that ranks third in the Ozark Region. The women’s team ranks second in the Ozark Region with 915 total points so far this season.

The UT Martin men’s team accounts for four cowboys who are ranked in the top-20 nationally of their respective events. Douglas Rich ranks second in team roping heeler (515 points) while Houston Herbert comes in at seventh in bareback riding (595). Ryan McDaniel (220 points in bull riding) and Ross Mitchell (280 points in team roping header) each rank 20th in their respective events.

On the women’s side, Ashley Brooks ranks ninth in the nation with 380 points in barrel racing. Madison Crow also ranks 16th nationally in that category with 350 points. That UT Martin duo ranks as the top two barrel racers in the Ozark Region.
