MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team rounds out a brief Illinois road swing when it pays a visit to the SIUE Cougars in an Ohio Valley Conference West division showdown on Saturday, Feb. 11. Tipoff from the Vadalabene Center is scheduled for 1 p.m.
With four regular season games remaining, the Skyhawks (17-10, 7-5 OVC) are tied with Southeast Missouri atop the OVC West standings. UT Martin has held at least a share of the division lead since its win over Eastern Kentucky last Saturday.
The Skyhawks have won three straight games against the Cougars by an average of 14.0 points per outing, including a 75-67 home victory over SIUE on Jan. 21. In that game, the Cougars raced out to a 37-35 halftime advantage before UT Martin sank 51.9 percent (14-for-27) of its field goal attempts in the final 20 minutes. Jacolby Mobley (18), Matthew Butler (14), Malik London (12) and Kedar Edwards (11) each scored in double-figures for the Skyhawks, who limited SIUE to 21.7 percent shooting (5-for-23) from three-point land.
UT Martin began its three-game road trip with an 81-71 setback at Eastern Illinois on Thursday. Reigning adidas OVC Player of the Week Javier Martinez was responsible for his eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds but ultimately the Skyhawks were hampered by 15 first-half turnovers. The backcourt duo of Mobley (team-best 17 points) and Jalen Jackson (career-high 11 points, six rebounds, five assists) also performed well for UT Martin.
Although SIUE (5-21, 0-12 OVC) is winless in OVC play, seven of the Cougars’ 12 losses have come by single digits - including a narrow 71-67 loss to Southeast Missouri on Thursday evening. SIUE built up a 14-point lead in the first half before the Redhawks evened the score at the break and pulled away late. Jalen Henry dialed up game-highs of 22 points and nine rebounds to pace the Cougars, who rank second in the country in free throw attempts (694).
