UTM Game Notes
The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will open a critical three-game road swing with a matchup at Ohio Valley Conference rival SIUE on Saturday, Feb. 11. Tipoff from the Vadalabene Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Skyhawks (8-17, 5-7 OVC) hit the road as winners of four of their last five games while currently sitting in a tie for the eighth and final spot in the upcoming OVC Basketball Championship. In the squad’s most recent contest the Skyhawks trailed for over 30 minutes against Eastern Illinois before completing a thrilling comeback which would be capped off by a layup by junior Janekia Mason with 0.9 seconds remaining on the clock to give the Skyhawks a 74-72 victory.
UT Martin is led by four-time reigning OVC Newcomer of the Week Ashton Feldhaus who once again paced the squad with 21 points and seven rebounds in the victory. Overall, Feldhaus is averaging 19.2 points per game over the last eight contests. The junior forward was joined in double figures by Myah Taylor (17 points), Mason (12 points) and Kendall Spray (11 points).
SIUE (10-15, 6-6 OVC) has won five of its last seven contests despite dropping its most recent decision at Southeast Missouri (78-74) on Wednesday evening. The Cougars are led in scoring by do-it-all forward Donshel Beck with 14.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Junior Lauren White ranks second on the team in scoring with 12.3 points while Nakiah Bell averages 9.8 points and 4.4 assists per game.
Saturday’s game marks the 20th meeting between the two programs in series history with UT Martin holding a 12-7 advantage. In the team’s prior meeting this season, SIUE picked up a 70-68 overtime victory on Jan. 21. Spray led all scorers with 23 points while Feldhaus tossed in 18 points for the Skyhawks. The Cougars saw White lead the squad with 17 points while Beck posted a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
