BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – A pair of commanding performances during a University of Tennessee at Martin sweep resulted in Javier Martinez winning the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week award, as announced today by the league office.
It was also announced on Tuesday that Martinez was the recipient of the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week. He joins Jacolby Mobley (Jan. 30) and Matthew Butler (Nov. 17) as Skyhawks who have been honored by the TSWA in 2016-17.
Martinez’s OVC mention marks the second straight week that a Skyhawk has taken home the league’s top award, following Mobley’s win last Monday. It is the first career OVC Player of the Week honor for Martinez, who becomes the 17th player in UT Martin history to garner the award.
A 6-7, 210-pound forward, Martinez went off for averages of 20.0 points and 16.5 rebounds per game while sinking 72 percent (18-for-25) of his field goal attempts. He helped lead the Skyhawks to a 75-46 win at Tennessee Tech on Wednesday and an 85-68 home victory over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, which lifted UT Martin into sole possession in the OVC West division standings.
Last Wednesday, Martinez became the first player in the Skyhawks’ Division-I Era (since 1992) to record a 20-20 game when he piled up 22 points and a career-best 21 rebounds at Tennessee Tech. He was just the 11th Division-I player to accomplish that feat in 2016-17 while his 21 boards equaled the single-game Division-I school record.
Three days later against Eastern Kentucky, Martinez wrapped up his seventh double-double of the season with 18 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. It marked the fifth time that the senior out of St. Croix, Virgin Islands accumulated a double-double against an OVC opponent this season.
Martinez currently ranks second in the OVC in field goal percentage (.647) while also ranking in the top-10 in offensive rebounding (2.8 per game, fourth) and overall rebounding (7.8 per game, eighth). In OVC play, he ranks second in the league with 9.8 rebounds per outing.
