UT MARTIN FOOTBALL PROGRAM ADDS 17 PLAYERS ON NATIONAL SIGNING DAY

February 1, 2017

MARTIN, Tenn. – In conjunction with National Signing Day, University of Tennessee at Martin head football coach Jason Simpson announced the signings of 17 players at a press conference in the Champions Club in the Hardy M. Graham Stadium Press Box this afternoon.

“I’m always excited and humbled by the players and families that choose UT Martin as their home for the next four years,” Simpson said. “Our staff worked extremely hard to sign this class from across five states but we stayed true to our roots with 10 players from the state of Tennessee.”

The aforementioned 17 players, in addition to four signees who joined the program on Mid-Year Signing Day in December, were highlighted in short video clips with analysis from Simpson at the press conference.

Overall, Simpson and his staff added 11 players on offense and 10 players on defense. The UT Martin coaching staff signed 18 high schoolers and three college transfers to make up the decorated class. The Skyhawks signed 10 players from the state of Tennessee, five players from Florida, three players from Ohio, two players from Mississippi and one player from Alabama.

The winningest active coach in the Ohio Valley Conference, Simpson boasts a 72-54 record in his Skyhawk tenure and has posted a .640 winning percentage in OVC games (57-32). The Skyhawks are coming of a 7-5 season while finishing 6-2 in league play, marking the fifth consecutive season that UT Martin finished in the OVC’s top three teams in the final standings.
