The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will look to build upon its previous two wins with a road trip to Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee Tech on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Tipoff from the Eblen Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and serves as the front end of a doubleheader with the Skyhawk men’s basketball team.
The Skyhawks (6-16, 3-6 OVC) enter the contest as winners of their past two contests after snapping a nine-game road losing streak with a 20-point victory at Murray State their last time out. Looking to build momentum towards a berth in the OVC Tournament, the Skyhawks saw five different player score in double figures in the 90-70 victory – including a pair of double-doubles by Ashton Feldhaus and Janekia Mason which ranked as the first tandem to post double-doubles in the same game since the 2013-14 season. Meanwhile, sophomore Emanye Robertson paced the Skyhawks by matching her previous career-high with 23 points along with four assists and four steals.
UT Martin swept the adidas OVC Player of the Week honors as Feldhaus notched the first Player of the Week honor of her career after averaging 21 points and 10 rebounds over the previous week along with tallying her fifth Newcomer of the Week nod. Wrapping up the weekly honors was Kendall Spray who was named the league’s top freshman once again after averaging 16 points per game.
Tennessee Tech (8-14, 5-4 OVC) heads into the contest currently sitting in a three-way tie for third place in the OVC standings despite dropping two of its last three contests in league play. In the team’s most recent outing, the Golden Eagles got back in the win column with a 53-51 victory over Eastern Kentucky.
The Golden Eagles are led by Yaktavia Hickson who paces the team with 17.0 points per game – ranking third in the OVC - while shooting 42.5 percent from the field. Treyvonna Brooks ranks as another top performer for the squad with 10.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
Wednesday’s matchup marks the 69th meeting between the two programs in series history with Tennessee Tech holding a sizable 45-23 advantage. Despite the lopsided series advantage, UT Martin holds a nine-game winning streak against Tennessee Tech dating back to the 2010-11 season.
