MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team officially opens preparations for the 2017 season with the start of official team practice on Saturday, Jan. 14.
UT Martin enters its 16th season with veteran head coach Donley Canary at the helm. The Skyhawks will look to a good mixture of veterans and talented newcomers to put the squad back into the Ohio Valley Conference title conversation following last season’s 30-26 overall record.
The Skyhawks return 13 players from last year’s squad – including four seniors which will look to mentor the team’s eight newcomers. UT Martin will feature senior outfielder Carly Gonzales and pitching ace Brooke Kennedy – both of which made substantial noise during the 2016 season. Gonzales is coming off an All-OVC campaign where she posted a .372 batting average with 61 base hits, 10 doubles, two home runs and 22 RBIs. Kennedy meanwhile posted a 17-14 overall record along with one save and a 2.16 ERA in 210.2 innings of work.
UT Martin will conduct its rigorous preseason practice schedule before ultimately kicking off the year at the Southeastern Louisiana Lion Classic in Hammond, La. running from Friday, Feb. 10 through Sunday, Feb. 12.
