MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rifle teams will host their annual UTM Rifle Open next week, January 17-22, as teams from Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee will compete in the event. Also individuals from California, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Kentucky will be competing in the tournament.
The Skyhawks will also be participating in the Withrow Open at Murray State throughout the week and head coach Bob Beard is hoping his squads can build some momentum heading into the OVC Championships that are scheduled for Feb. 4-5 at Morehead State and the NCAA qualification round at Murray State on Feb. 18.
“A number of our athletes have fired national class scores at times throughout the fall,” Beard said. “If we can do that consistently as a group over the next five weeks, we can improve our national ranking and have a chance at qualifying for the NCAA Championships.”
The Skyhawks will enter next week’s competitions ranked 19th nationally and during the fall season many of the UT Martin shooters posted career high scores, including a women’s team that set school records for individual air rifle (588 by Brianna Sawyers), team smallbore (2274 by Sawyers, Ashley Coots, Lindsey Flint and Jennifer Plocinik), team air rifle (2308 by Plocinik, Sawyers, Amanda Mayo and Alyson Sylvester) and team aggregate (4568 by Coots, Flint, Plocinik, Sawyers and Sylvester).
