The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball will look to get back to the friendly confines of the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center in its quest to snap a three-game Ohio Valley Conference losing streak against regional rival Southeast Missouri on Saturday, Jan. 14. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and serves as the frontend of a doubleheader with the Skyhawk men’s basketball team.
The Skyhawks (4-13, 1-3 OVC) are hoping that a return to the team’s familiar home will snap a three-game losing streak which ranks as the longest for the program in conference play since the 2009-10 season. Despite seeing the program’s 27-game conference home winning streak come to an end against Morehead State, the Skyhawks have posted a 55-6 record against OVC foes in the Elam Center over the past eight seasons.
UT Martin nearly snapped its lengthy road losing streak against Tennessee State before ultimately dropping the overtime contest 85-80 a week ago. In the contest, it was freshman standout Kendall Spray which put on a shooting clinic against the Lady Tigers by tallying a season-high 29 points – including seven three-pointers. As a whole, UT Martin boasts three players who average in double figures led by the play of Myah Taylor who averages 11.9 points per game. Spray ranks second on the team with 11.4 ppg while Emanye Robertson rounds out the trio with 11.3 points, 4.5 assists and 2.2 steals per game.
Saturday’s coaching matchup will pit UT Martin’s Kevin McMillan against Southeast Missouri’s Rekha Patterson. McMillan enters the contest currently tied for fifth place on the OVC’s all-time wins list with 146 in eight seasons. Patterson boasts a 22-25 mark in her second season leading the Redhawks.
Southeast Missouri (7-10, 1-3 OVC) enters the contest in the midst of a four-game road swing after splitting a pair of contests against Tennessee State and Belmont last weekend. The Redhawks are led by senior forward Olivia Hackmann with 16.1 points and 7.0 rebounds per game after recently joining the program’s 1,000-point club. The squad also leads the OVC in three-point field goal percentage at 37 percent while ranking second in assist to turnover ratio at 1.1.
The contest marks the 63rd meeting between the two programs with UT Martin holding a 33-29 series advantage. Overall the Skyhawks hold a 14-game winning streak against the Redhawks as the squad has posted a perfect 14-0 mark during the McMillan era. Southeast Missouri’s last victory in the series came on Feb. 21, 2009.
