The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will look to build upon its last contest when the Skyhawks hit the road once again to start a three-game road swing to conclude non-conference play, beginning with a contest at Southeastern Conference foe Missouri on Saturday, Dec. 17. Tipoff from Mizzou Arena is scheduled for 11 a.m.
The Skyhawks (3-7) enter the contest after snapping a brief losing streak with a 68-63 victory over Arkansas State on Wednesday afternoon. In the contest, the home squad shot 46 percent from the floor while boasting four players in double figures for just the second time this season. Despite watching an 18-point third quarter lead disappear midway through the fourth quarter, the Skyhawks would hold on down the stretch to preserve the victory with a 7-1 run to end the game.
Sophomore guard Myah Taylor paced all scorers with 17 points in the contest while Emanye Robertson (15 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals) and Shy Copney (15 points, four rebounds) also notched big afternoons. Freshman Ansley Eubank joined the trio in double figures for the first time in her young career by scoring 11 points.
UT Martin is under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan who boasts a 145-90 mark in eight seasons. Missouri is led by Robin Pingeton who holds a 444-249 career mark while posting a 109-92 record in seven seasons leading the Tigers.
Missouri (8-3) enters the contest as winners of four of its last five games while holding a perfect 6-0 record at home. The Tigers entered the season receiving votes in the preseason USA Today Coaches Poll after notching the team’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2006. This season the squad is led by Sophie Cunningham who averages 15.2 points per game while Cierra Porter averages near a double-double with 14.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
Saturday’s contest marks the sixth meeting between the two programs in series history with Missouri winning all five matchups. Despite meeting just two years ago, the only players that remains from the previous matchup is UT Martin’s Jessy Ward - who has yet to play this season due to injury - and Missouri’s duo of Lindsey Cunningham and Sierra Michaelis.
