MARTIN, Tenn. - Fresh off its third consecutive victory, the University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team opens a three-game road stretch when it takes on the Canisius Golden Griffins on Monday, Nov. 21. Tip-off time from the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 6 p.m. CST.
For the first time since the season opener, the Skyhawks (3-1) take their high-scoring show on the road. UT Martin, who leads the Ohio Valley Conference with 87.8 points per game, are tied for the fourth-most road victories (20) in Division-I basketball since the beginning of the 2014-15 season.
This game is the second of four contests for the Skyhawks in the Bluegrass Showcase, an exempt multi-team event that does not feature a bracket. UT Martin opened its participation in the event with an 85-74 home win over Cleveland State on Friday but will play its final three games of the event on the road this week, traveling to Duquesne and current No. 2 Kentucky after taking on Canisius.
In the aforementioned victory against Cleveland State, the Skyhawks led by as many as 30 points in the first half before fending off a late Viking rally. After its lead was cut to four points with a little over two minutes left to play, Javier Martinez capped off a tremendous game with four of the Skyhawks’ next five points to help seal the win. Martinez accumulated his first career double-double with career-highs of 23 points and 14 rebounds while Kedar Edwards (17), Jacolby Mobley (16) and Fatodd Lewis (10) also scored in double-figures for UT Martin.
Canisius (1-2) is coming off its first win of the season, a thrilling 78-77 road victory at Duquesne on Friday. Phil Valenti scored 14 points, including a go-ahead midrange floater with 1.6 seconds to go that proved to be the game-winning bucket. Jermaine Crumpton went 4-for-4 from beyond the three-point arc on his way to team-highs of 18 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Griffins, who also received 13 points out of Kassius Robertson.
