MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team cruised to a 76-48 victory over Christian Brothers in the team’s lone exhibition tune-up of the preseason on Monday evening.
The Skyhawks dominated the contest by winning nearly every team category while forcing the Lady Bucs into 28 turnovers. UT Martin won the battle of the boards while tallying 18 assists and 17 steals on the evening. With every player seeing action for the Skyhawks - minus star returners Jessy Ward and Shy Copney to injury - the team shot 40.6 percent from the floor and 54.2 percent from beyond the arc.
Freshman Kendall Spray made a splash in her Skyhawk debut scoring 21 points on the night while shooting 7-of-9 from the field and 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. Martin native Teddy Vincent also scored in double figures in her hometown debut, tallying 15 points. Freshman Ansley Eubank joined in the action by flirting with a double-double, tallying nine points and 11 rebounds.
Christian Brothers was led by forward Samantha Reeves who paced the team with 18 points and seven rebounds in the contest. Courtney Banks also scored in double figures, tossing in 13 points.
“Tonight was a good early test for us to get some nerves out and work on things,” said UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan. “We have a lot of faces that have never played for us before. We have a long way to go in teaching our kids how to play the way we believe that we can to win. They don’t understand what it is going to take yet, but I think we definitely showed glimpses of the type of team we can be. We tried to keep everyone’s minutes roughly in the same word but we are just so inexperienced. Patience is going to be a big thing for us early.”
UT Martin will officially open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 11 against No. 5 ranked Louisville. Tipoff from the Elam Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Season and individual game tickets are currently on sale for the 2016-17 Skyhawk basketball season.
