Team Results Individual Results
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team wrapped up its fall campaign with a jolt today, as the Skyhawks won both the team and individual titles at the Samford Intercollegiate held at Greystone Golf and Country Club.
UT Martin carded a 300 (+12) during today’s third round to end the tournament with a tally of 889 (+25), which was good enough for a five-shot victory. In addition, junior Hunter Richardson continued his hot stretch with his third straight tournament victory, shooting a 73 today on his way to a 215 (-1).
“The wind was swirling around today and that made club selections tough,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “We got off to a great start through the first five holes and that was a big key in us winning this thing. Our guys hung in and gritted it out until the very end and that’s one of the many things that this team does well.”
Richardson was the only golfer in the 44-man field to generate an overall score that was under par. He won the tournament by three shots over New Orleans’ Markus Krieger and tallied his sixth career win in the process.
“Hunter’s play has been speaking for itself,” Carpenter said. “To win three tournaments in a row is a remarkable feat and it is a testament to his hard work and dedication. I’m proud of Hunter and the entire team for another good tournament finish today.”
Austin Swafford was responsible for the second-best score in the field today, carding an even-par 72. That performance resulted in a 221 (+5) for the tournament and fifth place finish for the senior out of Lebanon, Tenn. – his third top-five outing of the season.
Gavin Shellnut shot a 78 today and narrowly missed out on a top-10 finish after wrapping up with a 226 (+10). Tyler Guy (80 today) and Jack Story (77 today) concluded the tournament with overall scores of 230 (+14) and 239 (+23), respectively.
The Skyhawks end their fall slate with a pair of victories and four top-three finishes out of six overall tournaments. UT Martin opens its spring schedule on Feb. 24-27 when it takes part in the Loyola Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Ariz. for the second straight year.
