Tournament Central Tournament Game Notes
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will begin the quest for its third Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship in the last six years when opening tournament play as the No. 6 seed on Wednesday, May 7-10 as defending regular season and tournament champion Jacksonville State plays host. The Skyhawks will open tournament play on Wednesday, May 7 against No. 3 seed Eastern Illinois at 10 a.m.
The Skyhawks (27-25-1, 14-10 OVC) come into the 2014 OVC Tournament as winners of four of their last five games and looking to find the postseason magic that has found the Skyhawks in four of the last five championship games.
Overall the Skyhawks will bring a 31-34 tournament record into play this week. Despite dropping the tournament opener against Murray State last season, the Skyhawks used the double-elimination format to their advantage, ripping off four consecutive victories and earning a spot in the championship game before falling to Jacksonville State 2-0.
The Skyhawks will turn to the play of Carly Gonzales who was recently named OVC Freshman of the Year along with All-OVC second team and All-Newcomer honors. Gonzales leads the team with a .321 batting average along with four doubles, a triple, one home run and 17 runs batted in. The freshman joined a squad which swiped 87 bases, recording nine stolen bases on the season.
Deven Wilson and Kayla Wade both join Gonzales with batting averages over .300. Wilson leads the team with 11 doubles and 26 RBIs while knocking four home runs. Wade has a team leading 52 base hits, including three triples to go with her league leading 23 stolen bases.
Elizabeth Wiegand posts a team-best 11-7 record while posting a 3.05 ERA in 144.2 innings pitched. Casey Vincent will see action with her 7-8 record, posting a 2.80 batting average in 97.2 innings of work. Brooke Kennedy joins in the action with a 6-3 mark in addition to three saves on the campaign.
