BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Freshman Carly Gonzales from the University of Tennessee at Martin softball team has been tabbed Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year along with All-OVC second team and All-Newcomer honors as voted upon by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.
Gonzales becomes the first Skyhawk to be named OVC Freshman of the Year since 2011 and just the fourth in school history. She continues a streak of seven consecutive seasons in which a Skyhawk has been tabbed to the All-Newcomer squad and 13th straight year with a member on the All-OVC second team.
Gonzales played in 45 games this season, leading the Skyhawks with a .321 batting average. Along with her potent average, Gonzales tallied four doubles, a triple, one home run and 17 runs batted in. The freshman joined a squad which swiped 87 bases, recording nine stolen bases on the season. She also tallied a .404 slugging percentage while reaching base at a .383 clipping.
A native of Anaheim, Calif., Gonzales excelled when it came time for conference play. Against OVC opponents, Gonzales’ average rose to .362 while providing much of her offensive punch with one home run and 12 RBIs in 22 games. She led the team in conference play with 30 total bases while tying with teammate Deven Wilson for the team lead with 21 hits.
“I am extremely proud of Carly,” said UT Martin coach Donley Canary. “To her credit she has capitalized in her opportunities and has proved to be a solid player within our lineup. There were several great freshman in our league, but she was very deserving of this honor.”
Jacksonville State's Sara Borders was named the 2014 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year while the Gamecocks' Tiffany Harbin was tabbed the 2014 OVC Pitcher of the Year. JSU's Jana McGinnis was named the OVC Coach of the Year.
Gonzales and the No. 6 seed Skyhawks will look to make a splash in the upcoming OVC Tournament which is scheduled to get underway on Wednesday, May 7. Action from OVC host Jacksonville State will get underway at 10 a.m. against OVC rival and No. 3 seed Eastern Illinois.
