CHARLESTON, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team would be held to one hit in the series finale at defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Eastern Illinois on Sunday afternoon, 4-0.
The Skyhawks (22-19-1, 9-6 OVC) tallied their lone base hit of the day on a pinch hit bunt single by Juli Layne in the fourth inning. As a team, the Skyhawks were held to just four hits in the series.
Casey Vincent (5-6) tossed four innings, striking out three, issuing two walks and allowing two earned runs. Brooke Kennedy appeared in relief, breaking a five game scoreless streak with one earned run. Elizabeth Wiegand also appeared in the game, tallying one out.
For the second straight day Stephanie Maday earned the complete game win in the circle, tallying her sixth shutout of the season. Maday struck out two batters, allowed one walk and stranded five runners on base.
Eastern Illinois would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Bailey O’Dell delivered a two-out single to center field which would score the Panthers first run. O’Dell would eventually come around to score in the inning on a pair of error, stretching the Panther lead to 2-0.
The Panthers would add two more runs, scoring a run in both the fifth and sixth inning. Jennette Isaac would stroke a triple to right center, before scoring off a wild pitch to give the Panthers the 3-0 advantage. O’Dell would strike again in the sixth inning, pushing across the game’s final run with a sacrifice fly.
UT Martin will look to shake off the rough weekend when the Skyhawks return to action next weekend with a pair of twinbills against Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State.
