LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team shaved nine strokes off its first round score to sit in a tie for seventh out of 14 teams after Day 1 at the UALR First Tee Classic at Chenal Country Club.
The Skyhawks compiled a score of 306 after the first round of play this morning but bounced back with a 297 in the afternoon round. Overall, UT Martin carded a 603 combined score (+27), tying Arkansas State for seventh place. Sitting atop the leaderboard is Louisiana-Monroe (584, +8).
“This is one of the top golf courses in the state of Arkansas and it doesn’t yield itself to a lot of birdies,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “You have to hit a good tee shot and be a good iron player because the greens are a chore here. Our first round was a little rough but we didn’t play bad in the second round. We had four bogeys in the last two or three holes that hurt us but that taught us that you can’t let up and you have to fight through tough situations. We will come out and play hard tomorrow.”
Freshman Austin Swafford led the Skyhawks today with a 149 (74, 75). He was followed closely by Ben Reeves (77, 74) and Tyler Shellnut (78, 73), who each compiled scores of 151. Clay Harbin (77, 75) and Brendon Caballero (83, 85) rounded out the scoring with scores of 152 and 168, respectively.
The third and final round of the tournament is set for an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday, March 25.
