MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s tennis team faced formidable opponents in Ohio Valley Conference action this weekend, falling to Eastern Kentucky 6-1 on Saturday before dropping to Morehead State 5-2 on Sunday.
The Skyhawks (4-8, 1-3 OVC) began the weekend against Eastern Kentucky (7-7, 4-0 OVC) by winning the No. 1 doubles match as Ivon Simic and Sarah Candeloro picked up the 8-5 victory over Melissa Gerritsen and Kristina Labeja. The Colonels would ultimately go away with the doubles point after winning both No. 2 and 3 matches as the duo pairs of Jessica Silva and Burcu Tari along with Katie McCall and Hitomi Naito both fell 8-4 in their doubles matches.
UT Martin’s lone win in singles play came at No. 3 when Naito knocked off Saioa Oscoz from EKU with a 7-6, 6-4 finish. The Skyhawks would drop the OVC contest 6-1.
The Skyhawks looked to visiting Morehead State (6-9, 3-1 OVC) on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles swept doubles play to clinch the point before moving into singles play where they would ultimately pick up the 5-2 victory.
UT Martin won two singles matches on the day as Naito and Silva each picked up victories. Naito kept her perfect singles weekend alive, moving to 9-3 on the season, by picking up a decisive 6-3, 6-2 victory. Silva would also chip in a dominating performance at No. 5 by defeating Sandrine Beaule 6-1, 6-2.
The Skyhawks will return to action Wednesday, March 26 when they play host to OVC foe Southeast Missouri. Action from the Skyhawk Tennis Complex is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m.
