NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin women's tennis squad picked up its first Ohio Valley Conference win of the season with a dominating effort over a short-handed Tennessee State squad 7-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The Skyhawks (4-6, 1-1 OVC) cruised to an early advantage by picking up the doubles point. The duo of senior Ivon Simic and freshman Sarah Candeloro defeated Jade Daniels and Trinity Randolph 8-0 in No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 pair of Hitomi Naito and Katie McCall would then pick up the deciding point with a 8-2 victory over Attallah Eiland and Victoria Haynes. The Skyhawks would pick up their third match victory in No.3 doubles as Tennessee State could not field a pair to face Burcu Tari and Florence Nicole.
UT Martin continued its dominance when moving into singles play, earning a six point sweep to take the match. Simic won the matchup of No. 1 singles over Haynes (6-2, 6-1) before Naito knocked off Randolph (6-1, 6-0). Tari would see her first competition of the day against Daniels, picking up the 6-0, 6-1 match victory.
The Skyhawks senior McCall defeated Eiland 6-2 before the opposition had to retire following an injury. Nicole would join in the action, picking up the 6-0, 6-3 victory before Candeloro won the No. 6 singles match when TSU failed to present an opponent.
UT Martin's match against Belmont, originally scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, March 15 has been postponed due to the threat of inclement weather in the area. A makeup date for the OVC contest has not yet been set.
