MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin fell behind early and could never regain momentum in a 10-2 loss to Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State at Skyhawk Field this evening.
Chase Young reached base three times (two singles and a walk) and scored tonight while Jake Deason homered and Taylor Cox also drove in a run to lead UT Martin (1-14, 0-4 OVC).
On the mound, Skyhawk starting pitcher Dalton Potts (0-3) allowed six earned runs over 3.2 innings. Alex Boshers (three runs, two hits allowed in 4.1 innings) and Chris Flores (scoreless ninth inning) also made relief appearances for the Skyhawks this evening.
Murray State (8-7, 3-1 OVC) scored twice in the first inning and added four runs in the top of the second to go ahead by a 6-0 margin.
Potts held the Thoroughbreds scoreless in the third, allowing UT Martin to get a run back in the bottom half of the inning. Deason led off the inning by driving a 1-0 pitch deep to left field for his first homer of the season and the third longball of his career.
The ‘Breds tacked on one more run in the top of the fourth before Boshers entered the contest. Boshers got out of a jam in the fourth and needed only 10 pitches to get through a perfect top of the fifth.
Murray State scored one run in the top of the sixth to make the score 8-1. UT Martin scored again in the bottom of the sixth, as Young drew a leadoff walk. After Phil Sorensen drew a two-out walk to push Young into scoring position, Cox drove him in with a single to right center.
Boshers held off Murray State for a scoreless seventh but the ‘Breds would add a run in both the eighth and ninth innings. The Skyhawks would get runners in scoring position in both the seventh and eighth innings but couldn’t cut into their deficit any further.
Because of the threat of rain on Sunday, the two teams will finish out the series with a Saturday doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m.
