MARTIN, Tenn. - After a slew of road games at the beginning of the season, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team finally returns home to host Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State this weekend at Skyhawk Field. First pitch times for the series are as follows: 6 p.m. on Friday, March 14; 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 15 and 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 16.
A full month into the 2014 season, UT Martin has only played one game at home and none since Feb. 25. The Skyhawks had a three-game set against Eastern Michigan on Feb. 21-23 scheduled to be played at home but unplayable field conditions forced the series to be moved to Nashville.
The Skyhawks (1-13, 0-3 OVC) opened league play last weekend at Jacksonville State, falling 10-5 on Friday, 6-2 on Saturday and 6-4 on Sunday. Despite the sweep, Chase Young guided the UT Martin offense with a .444 batting average while Jake Deason (.333, three doubles, two RBI’s, two runs scored) also had a great weekend at the plate. The Skyhawk bullpen also quietly pieced together a solid weekend, as John Skubina, Stu Jones, Carter Smith and Taylor Cox combined to post a 2.97 ERA in 9.1 innings of work.
Junior southpaw Dalton Potts (0-2, 8.55 ERA) is penciled in as UT Martin’s probable starting pitcher for Friday, followed by junior left-hander Cox (0-3, 4.84) in Game 2 and junior righty Alex Martin (0-3, 3.86) in the series finale. Skubina, Smith and Chris Ross have each made a team-high five relief appearances.
Murray State (7-7, 2-13 OVC) is coming off a 27-7 home loss to Arkansas State on Tuesday but last weekend, the Thoroughbreds opened their OVC slate by taking two out of three games against Morehead State. Tyler Lawrence and Anthony Bayus each hit .357 in the series while Luke Daugherty drove in five runs to lead Murray State offensively.
Senior right-hander Cameron Finch (1-1, 3.57) is expected to start Game 1 on the mound for the ‘Breds. Junior southpaw Brock Downey (3-0, 1.78) is slated to take the mound in Game 2 while sophomore lefty Sheldon Baxter (0-1, 4.15) is listed as Murray State’s probable starting pitcher for Game 3. Out of the bullpen, John Lollar and Cody Maerz each have made five appearances with a save apiece.
Friday’s game is scheduled to be streamed live online and free of charge on the OVC Digital Network at the link above. Live stats for all three games can be found at the top of the webpage as well.
