MONTICELLO, Ark. – For the fourth time in six tries this season, the University of Tennessee at Martin men’s rodeo team emerged as victors when it posted another commanding win this weekend at Arkansas-Monticello.
The men’s team amassed 710 points over the weekend, winning by a margin of 250 points over second-place Missouri Valley College. The UT Martin women’s squad also posted one of their best performances of the season, compiling 135 points to come in sixth place.
Tanner Phipps stole the show in bareback riding, leading a trio of impressive efforts by UT Martin cowboys. Phipps finished first in average (154) and in the first go (80) while Tyler Waltz finished first in the short go (80) and second in average (150). Colt Kitaif (67) also finished in sixth in the short go and in average.
In calf roping, Ben Walker recorded a first-place finish in the first go (8.7) before finishing fifth in the short go (27.8) and average (36.5).
Natalie Fletcher led the women’s team in breakaway roping, coming in first place after the initial round (2.2) before finishing fifth in average. Savannah Warner also tallied points in the event for UT Martin, finishing fourth in the first go with a score of 2.6.
In steer wrestling, John Alley brought home a fifth place finish in average (15.5) after his performance in the short go (5.6) was good enough for third.
UT Martin excelled in the team roping portion of the rodeo. Will Lummus and Tucker Kail finished second in average (21.4) after accounting for a second place finish in the first go (7.7) and a fifth place mark in the short go (13.7). The duo of Clay Mitchell and Lane Mitchell was responsible for a third place finish in average (22.2) after an outstanding effort in the short go (10.5, second place). Alley and Clark Adcock capped off a solid performance with a fourth place finish in average (22.4) after tallying points in both the first go (11.1, fifth) and the short go (11.3, third). The team of Ben Walker and Zach Mabry came in fifth with a 23.8 average after coming in fourth place in the short go (11.9).
The women’s team also had a great showing in barrel racing, paced by Katie Brown (second place with 29.89 average, second place with 14.79 short go, fourth with 15.1 first go). Nealey Dalton came in fifth place in average (30.13) after splitting fourth in the short go with a score of 14.87. Dacia Horne also contributed in the event, finishing sixth in the first go (15.16).
Matt Smith led the way for UT Martin in bull riding, coming in third in average (148) after finishing third in the short go (73) and splitting third in the first go (75).
UT Martin will return to the Natural State next week for a rodeo hosted by Southern Arkansas on March 13-15.
