JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s tennis won the doubles’ point but would eventually drop the Ohio Valley Conference opener to Jacksonville State 4-3.
The Skyhawks (3-6, 0-1 OVC) saw the duo of Ivon Simic and Sarah Candeloro got the Skyhawks off on the right foot in doubles play by picking up wins in No. 1 doubles with an 8-7 (7-1) decision. The pair of Burcu Tari and Jessica Silva would keep the momentum going by clinching the doubles point with commanding 8-0 victory.
Jacksonville State (4-6, 1-0 OVC) would look to bounce back in singles play, notching wins in both No. 1 and 2 singles competition. Simic fell to Raisa Guasti 6-4, 6-2 before Candeloro fell to Olivia Nguyen in a three-set showdown 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Hitomi Naito started a rally for the Skyhawks, picking up a win at No. 3 singles with the 6-3, 6-2 decision. Tari tallied her second win of the day with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 4.
Jacksonville State would pick up wins at both No. 5 and 6 to give the Gamecocks the victory. Silva fell to Danielle Kerindi 6-3, 6-3 while Katie McCall fell to Sadey St. Amant 6-0, 6-3.
The Skyhawks will be back in action on Saturday, March 15 when they travel to Tennessee State before ending the road swing at Belmont on Sunday, March 16. Action on both days is scheduled for 2 p.m.
