MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s tennis team knocked off the No. 1 ranked NAIA foe University of Auburn at Montgomery this afternoon for their second consecutive win with a 4-3 decision.

“This was a big win for our tennis program,” said tennis coach Dennis Taylor. Auburn Montgomery has a strong tennis tradition. They seem to win the National Championship every year. I hope this win gives the girls a much needed shot of confidence. They will need it Wednesday when we play West Florida, the No. 1 ranked Division II team in the nation.”

Despite dropping the doubles point, the Skyhawks (3-5) won four doubles matches to take the 4-3 victory over the Warhawks on Monday afternoon. The Warhawks picked up the No. 1 doubles point when the eighth-ranked duo of Jade Curtis and Chanel Cunningham defeated Ivon Simic and Sarah Candeloro 8-3.

The Skyhawks would get on the board when the No. 2 pair of Jessica Silva and Burcu Tari picked up the 8-1 victory. The Skyhawks would fall in the third match however, giving the Warhawks the doubles point.

Singles play began as second-ranked Curtis knocked off Skyhawk No. 1 Simic with a 6-7 (7-3), 6-0, 10-8 decision. Candeloro would start a rally that saw the Skyhawks pick up three consecutive victories with her 6-0, 6-1 match victory over Paula Diaz.

Freshmen Hitomi Naito and Burcu would pick up their respective 6-2, 7-6 (4-7) and 6-4, 6-2 victories to give the Skyhawks the advantage going into the final two singles matches. Silva would fall 6-1, 6-0 before senior Katie McCall tallied the decisive 6-2, 6-0 victory to seal the match victory for the Skyhawks.

UT Martin will return to action Wednesday, March 5 when the Skyhawks travel to West Florida. Action is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m.
