MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will finish the regular season portion of the schedule when they play host to Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay on Saturday, March 1. The Skyhawks will recognize their four seniors before tipoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Skyhawks (21-7, 14-1 OVC) are coming off their first win at Eastern Illinois since Jan. 10, 2008 and first series sweep of the Panthers since 2004. UT Martin picked up the road victory on Thursday night 93-69 behind the play of Heather Butler who tallied her second consecutive 29 point outing. Butler was supported by freshman Ashia Jones who tallied 22 points and 10 rebounds in the victory while Jasmine Newsome (17) and Katie Schubert (12) each finished in double figures.
Austin Peay (9-19, 6-9 OVC) comes into action currently tied for eighth place and fighting for a spot in next week’s OVC Tournament. The Lady Govs need either a win or a little help to make the eight time field on the season’s final day. Four APSU players are averaging 10 or more points in conference play, with sophomore Tiasha Gray’s 15.2 mark leading the squad.
UT Martin won the previous matchup on Jan. 6 when the Skyhawks used a 64-point second half to knock off the Lady Govs 95-81. The Skyhawks will recognize four seniors before the game as Butler, Newsome, Megan White and Tabitha Causey celebrate their final home game. Along with Senior Day activities, the Skyhawks will be awarded the 2014 OVC regular season championship.
