MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will round out the road portion of the schedule when they travel to Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Illinois on Thursday, Feb. 27. Tipoff from Lantz Arena is schedule for 7 p.m.
For the second time in program history, the Skyhawks (20-7, 13-1 OVC) clinched an outright OVC regular-season championship against Murray State on Saturday. Along with the OVC championship and a No. 1 seed in the upcoming OVC Tournament, the Skyhawks reached the 20 win plateau for just the sixth time in program history.
UT Martin placed three players in double figures against the Racers, led by the play of senior guard Heather Butler who tallied 29 points to move into 24th on the NCAA’s all-time scoring list. Freshman Ashia Jones earned her fifth OVC Freshman of the Week honor after tallying 20 points and 11 rebounds against the Racers, her fourth double-double of the season. Jasmine Newsome tallied 19 points, 10 assists and seven steals.
Eastern Illinois (12-13, 7-7 OVC) has been hot of late, winning two straight games on the road and moving into second in the OVC West Division standings. The Panthers are tied for fifth overall in the race for the OVC Tournament. EIU has three players in double figures, led by the play of Sabina Oroszova who averages 17.2 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. Katlyn Payne (14.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg) and Jordyne Crunk (12.5 ppg, 3.2 rpg) both average in double figures.
UT Martin leads the all-time series between the schools 24-17, earning victories in three consecutive contests. The Skyhawks won the first matchup this season 103-84 on Jan. 27.
