MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is proud to announce Mrs. Jenny Harrison as its “Hoops For Heroes” ambassador for the upcoming Ohio Valley Conference basketball tournament, held at Municipal Auditorium in downtown Nashville on March 5-8.

Harrison, who was recently recognized during Saturday’s basketball doubleheader, currently serves as the principal secretary for UT Martin student health and counseling services.

Harrison served half of the 13.5 years of her military career overseas. She joined the United States Army after high school graduation in the summer of 1978, attending basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. From there, she was trained at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas as a field medic and pharmacy technician.

Harrison retired as a Sergeant in 1992 after being stationed in Germany, Belgium, Arizona, Georgia and Washington, DC.

“It is truly an honor to be selected as UT Martin’s ‘Hoops For Heroes’ representative,” Harrison said. “I am very proud to represent the United States Army as well as all former and present military service members. I want every member of the SAAC to know how much I appreciate their gift. I feel very pampered and appreciated!”

Currently in its fourth year, the OVC SAAC representatives created the “Hoops For Heroes” initiative as a way to honor military men and women in OVC communities. During the course of the academic year, the SAAC members at each school raise enough money to sponsor sending at least one service person to the OVC Tournament, along with his/her family.

The honorees receive a two-night hotel stay in Nashville, up to four tickets to Friday and Saturday’s tournament sessions, as well as gas and meal gift cards. Harrison will join the rest of the OVC’s “Hoops For Heroes” representatives during an on-court presentation during either the Friday night men’s semifinal round or the women’s and men’s championship round on Saturday.
