CARBONDALE, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s tennis team competed in its third match of the weekend at Southern Illinois before dropping a tightly contested match with a 5-2 decision at Sports Blast.
The Skyhawks (1-4) dropped the No. 1 doubles match as Katie McCall and Sarah Candeloro fell 8-2. The Skyhawk tandem of Hitomi Naito and Ivon Simic would rebound by picking up the 8-7 (6-0) victory. With the doubles point on the line, the Skyhawks narrowly dropped the No. 3 match as Burcu Tari and Jessica Silva fell 8-5.
In singles play, the Salukis narrowly picked up wins in both No. 1 and 2 matches. Simic fell to Natasha Tomishima 6-4, 6-3 before Naito dropped the 6-3, 6-1 decision to Meagan Monaghan.
Candeloro and Tari would both look to turn the tide for the visiting Skyhawks, picking up victories in their respective No. 3 and 4 singles matches. Candeloro picked up the first victory with a 6-2, 7-5 margin over Anita Lee. Tari followed suit with a 6-2, 7-5 (7-0) win over Ariadna Cairo Baza to clinch the Skyhawks final point of the day.
The Skyhawks could not overcome the Salukis in the final two matches, dropping the No. 5 and 6 singles matches. Silva fell to Polina Dozortseva 6-1, 6-0 before McCall dropped the 6-2, 6-2 decision to Lauren Hoekstra.
UT Martin will return to action with on Sunday, March 2 when they travel to North Alabama. Action is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
