NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team generated a season-high in runs today but the Skyhawks couldn’t cool off Eastern Michigan’s bats in an 18-6 loss at ES Rose Park.
Earlier in the day, Game 1 of the series was officially concluded, as Eastern Michigan claimed a 17-3 win. The game had been postponed in the top of the ninth inning on Friday evening because of a curfew at Belmont University, where the series is being played because of poor playing conditions at Skyhawk Field.
A total of four Skyhawks chalked up multi-hit outings today. Sophomore Drew Erie went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI while the freshman trio of Chase Young, Ben Upton and Max Balter also collected two hits, one run scored and one RBI apiece.
On the mound, Dalton Potts was charged with the loss after allowing 10 runs in 2.1 innings. Carter Smith (2.2 innings, four runs), Cody Miller (one run against two batters faced), Taylor Douglas (two scoreless innings) and Jacob Gansert (three runs in one inning) also made appearances today.
Serving as the home team for this game, Eastern Michigan got off to a quick start with six runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the second.
UT Martin got a pair of runs back in the top of the third. Erie and Balter led off with back-to-back singles. Fletcher Johnson followed with a bunt single and advanced 90 feet on a throwing error by the Eagle third baseman that allowed Erie to score. Young then followed with an RBI single up the middle to make the score 6-2. The Skyhawks would later load the bases with one out but couldn’t push across another run.
Eastern Michigan added two more runs in the third but Smith held the Eagles scoreless in the fourth. UT Martin tacked on one more run in the fifth when Upton singled in Young, who had reached on a bunt single to begin the inning.
The Eagles scored four runs in the fifth but UT Martin kept battling. Erie was issued a leadoff walk and eventually came around to score on a throwing error in the sixth to make the score 14-4.
Eastern Michigan scored once in the sixth before the Skyhawks tallied two runs in the top of the seventh. Nick Molina (walk), Upton (bunt single) and Kenny King (pinch hit walk) were all aboard the basepaths when Erie was hit by a pitch to score Molina. Balter then lifted a sacrifice fly into center that plated Upton.
Douglas kept the Eagles off the scoreboard in the seventh but Eastern Michigan tacked on three more runs in the eighth to conclude the scoring for the game.
UT Martin will go for its first win of the season on Sunday, Feb. 23 in the series finale against Eastern Michigan at 4 p.m.
