MURRAY, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s tennis team competed in their second match of the spring against Central Arkansas on a neutral court in Murray, Ky. over the weekend. The Skyhawks would drop the doubles point before dropping the match 5-2.
The Skyhawks (0-2) dropped the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches as Katie McCall and Sarah Candeloro fell to Kelsey Williams and Allison Murphy 8-6. In No. 2 doubles the tandem of Hitomi Naito and Ivon Simic fell 8-2 to Cassidy Crawford and Kristina Horsikyan. The Skyhawks would win the No. 3 doubles match 8-7, as Burcu Tari and Jessica Silva took down Sasha Ruocco and Krizia Buck.
In singles play, Simona Horsikyan defeated Simic 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 1 match. The Skyhawks got on the board in the No. 2 match as Naito knocked off Crawford 6-1, 6-4. Candeloro would battle tough in the No. 3 match but would ultimately fall to Williams 7-5, 6-2.
Tari got the Skyhawks their final point of the day in the no. 4 match, taking down Kristina Horsikyan 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Central Arkansas won the final two singles matches, as Ruocco took the no. 5 match 7-5, 6-2 over Silva, and Buck scored a 6-1, 6-1 victory over McCall in the no. 6 match.
“We have a young and talented team,” said tennis coach Dennis Taylor. “This is only our second match and I can already see improvement. As soon as the freshmen can get a few more matches under their belts, I think we will be a very strong team.”
The Skyhawks will return to action with three matches this weekend, beginning with a trip to Evansville on Friday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks will then travel to Carbondale, Ill. on Saturday to take on Arkansas State at 10 a.m. before playing Southern Illinois at 10 a.m. Sunday.
