CHOCTAW, Miss. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team opened the spring season with a solid team score of 296, sitting in second place out of 15 teams after the first round of the Frito Lay/Taco Bell Intercollegiate, held at the Dancing Rabbit Oaks Club.
Missouri-St. Louis is atop the leaderboard after the first round, posting a team score of 293 (+5). The Skyhawks (+8) are just three shots behind the lead and hold a comfortable 11-shot advantage over third place West Alabama (307, +19).
Brendon Caballero leads UT Martin after the first round with an even-par 72, which puts him in sixth place out of 84 golfers in the event. Tyler Shellnut ranks in a four-way tie for eighth place with his 74 (+2), while Clay Harbin and Ben Reeves each shot a 75 (+3) – which is tied for 12th place.
Tyler Guy (77, +5) and Austin Swafford (85, +13) rounded out the field for the Skyhawks, who won their spring season opener on this same course last season.
The second and final round is set to tee off on Monday morning.
