For the sixth time this season, the Skyhawks (18-7, 11-1 OVC) scored in triple figures to return to their winning ways against Southeast Missouri, 102-70, on the road. With the victory, the Skyhawks clinched the OVC West Division championship title and have earned either the No. 1 or 2 seed and a double-bye in the upcoming OVC Tournament.
UT Martin placed four players in double figures but it was the play of two underclassmen which stole the show for the Skyhawks. Freshman Ashia Jones tied a career high with 27 points while setting a new personal best with 15 rebounds. Tossing in a career night of her own was sophomore Katie Schubert. Schubert knocked down six field goals, including three from beyond the arc to score a personal best 19 points. Seniors Heather Butler and Jasmine Newsome joined in the action, scoring 19 and 18 points, respectively.
Tennessee State (10-15, 7-5 OVC) is among the OVC East leaders coming into Monday’s action, winning four of their last six contests. The Lady Tigers most recently dropped a hard-fought contest to Belmont 57-48. TSU was led by leading scorer Chelsea Hudson who tallied 15 points and eight rebounds while Jayda Johnson chipped in 10 points of her own.
UT Martin leads the all-time series matchup against Tennessee State with a 29-26 advantage. The Skyhawks have won the last six matchups, including the lone showdown last season 77-58 in which both Butler and Newsome scored 31 points on the night.
