UTM Tournament Notes
MARTIN, Tenn. - For the second consecutive weekend in the early part of the 2014 softball season, the University of Tennessee at Martin Skyhawks will play in a tough non-conference tournament. The Georgia State Panther Invitational is set for Feb. 15-16 at the Heck Softball Complex in Panthersville, Ga. and at Georgia Tech’s Mewborn Field in Atlanta, Ga.
The Skyhawks (1-3) will kick off the tournament against host Georgia State on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 12:15 p.m. Central. Following the matchup with the Panthers, the Skyhawks will play Big 10 foe Indiana at 2:30 p.m. Both games will be played on the campus of Georgia State.
The Skyhawks will play another two games on Sunday, facing off against Bowling Green at 11:15 p.m., followed by Georgia Tech at 1:30 p.m. Both games on Sunday will be play on the campus of Georgia Tech. UT Martin is a combined 5-11 against Indiana (2-1), Georgia State (1-3), Bowling Green (1-1) and Georgia Tech (1-6).
UT Martin opened its 2014 season this past weekend in the Lady Techster Invitational at Louisiana Tech where they went 1-3. UT Martin earned its sole victory against Houston Baptist with a 4-2 advantage, but suffered losses to Louisiana Tech, Wichita State and Jackson State.
Junior Lauren Smith and freshman Renate Meckl earned all-tournament team honors after a successful four-game tournament. Smith hit .455 on the weekend while hitting two home runs and tallying five RBIs. Meckl posted a .417 batting average, recording one home run while driving in a pair of runs. Another freshman standout was Taylor Manning who posted a .417 batting average while driving in five RBIs.
Juniors Kenzi Tate and Casey Vincent both earned a pair of appearances over the weekend with Tate earning the team’s lone victory. Elizabeth Wiegand earned the Skyhawks third start of the season, posting a 3.50 ERA in six innings of work. Despite the team’s 5.12 ERA, the Skyhawk pitching core held their opponents to a .231 batting average.
