MARTIN, Tenn. – Nico Zych, a 6-0, 180-pound infielder on the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team, has been recognized as a Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference second teamer by College Sports Madness.
A junior out of Monee, Ill., Zych is the only Skyhawk returnee to have started in all 51 games last season. He began the season as the starting second baseman before earning the starting nod at shortstop for the final 47 games of the 2013 campaign.
Zych hit .283 in 180 at-bats in 2013, batting primarily out of the No. 6 spot in the lineup. He tallied seven doubles, a triple and two homers, driving in 17 runs while scoring 17 runs himself. He led the team with nine sacrifice hits and was also a perfect 7-for-7 in stolen bases. He boasted a .952 fielding percentage at the toughest defensive position on the diamond.
Zych ranked second on the team with 14 multi-hit games last year. He had four games in which he collected three hits – three of which came against OVC opposition. He also had three multi-RBI performances and excelled in the clutch, accumulating a team-high seven RBI’s in 10 chances with a runner on third base and less than two outs.
The Skyhawks begin the 2014 campaign – the first in interim head coach Brad Goss’ tenure – next weekend with a three-game set at UAB on Feb. 14-16.
