MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball will hit the road for the first of three consecutive away games when they travel to Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Kentucky on Monday, Feb. 3. Action from McBrayer Arena is schedule for 6 p.m. Central.
The Skyhawks (16-6, 9-0 OVC) will put their nine game winning streak and perfect OVC record to the test when they travel to OVC East leader Eastern Kentucky. Offense has not been a problem for the Skyhawks as of late, reaching the century mark in three consecutive games, including four of the last five outings. Most recently the Skyhawks defeated defending OVC champion Eastern Illinois, 103-84.
Four players scored in double figures for the Skyhawks, but it was the play of Heather Butler and Ashia Jones who stole the show. Butler continued her torrid scoring pace with 28 points and a career high nine assists, moving the senior into 35th on the NCAA’s all-time scoring list. Joining Butler was Jones who scored a career best 27 points en route to her third OVC Freshman of the Week honor in the four weeks.
Eastern Kentucky (12-7, 6-2 OVC) has won four of its last five games, including a 75-56 victory over Southeast Missouri on Saturday. The Lady Colonels were led in scoring by sophomore Miranda Maples who tallied 20 points while grabbing a team-best 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Leading scorer Marie Carpenter (21.7 ppg) scored 19 points to move into ninth on the EKU’s all-time scoring list with 1,404 career points.
Despite Eastern Kentucky holding a firm hold on the series matchup with a 30-17 advantage, the Skyhawks have owned the matchup of late. UT Martin has won each of the last seven outings, including a 78-63 victory in the OVC Tournament quarterfinals last season, a game which senior Jasmine Newsome set a tournament record with her 41 point night.
