MARTIN, Tenn.- The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will look to host defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Eastern Illinois when the Panthers invade the Elam Center on Monday, Jan. 27. Tipoff between the divisional rivals is schedule for 7 p.m.
The Skyhawks (15-6, 8-0) continued their season-best eight game winning streak to remain perfect in OVC play while remaining 4-0 against West division opponents. The team’s 111 points ranked as the second highest in program history and most ever scored at home. The Skyhawks have scored 100-plus in two straight games, while tallying their third triple digit game in the last four outings.
Several players contributed for the Skyhawks offensive outburst in a game which saw 12 career highs be set or tied. A total of six players scored in double figures for the Skyhawks, led by freshmen Ashia Jones who tossed in 19 points and Elizabeth Masengil who tied a career high with 17 points. Senior guards Jasmine Newsome and Heather Butler tossed in 15 and 12 points, respectively.
Eastern Illinois (8-11, 3-5 OVC) comes into the matchup, dropping four of the last five, including a 66-49 setback at Southeast Missouri Saturday evening. The Panthers are led in scoring by junior Sabina Oroszova who averages a double-double with 17.6 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. Oroszova is joined in double figures by Katlyn Payne (13.4 ppg) and Jordyne Crunk (12.5 ppg).
The two teams will be meeting for the 41st time in series history, with the Skyhawks holding a 23-17 advantage. Both teams split the season series last year, each winning on their home floor, before the Skyhawks picked up the 71-69 victory in the OVC Tournament semifinals.
