OVC Women's Basketball Report

– The Ohio Valley Conference announced today that the University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball duo of Heather Butler and Ashia Jones has garnered adidas OVC Player and Co-Freshman of the Week honors, respectively.

Leading the team to the program’s first 5-0 start to open OVC play in school history, Butler and Jones averaged a combined 48.5 point per game in a pair of home victories of Belmont and Southeast Missouri over the past week.

Butler has continued her outstanding start to OVC play, averaging 22.5 points to go along with 5.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. A native of Medina, Tenn. Butler tallied 22 point to knock of Belmont on Saturday afternoon. She was back at it on Monday evening, scoring 23 points in just 22 minutes of play against Southeast Missouri. With her performance against Southeast Missouri, Butler moved into second on the league’s all-time scoring list with 2,506 career points to pass Austin Peay’s Brooke Armistead. She now needs just 21 points to move into first on the OVC’s all-time leaderboard.

Jones continues to leave her mark as one of the league’s top freshman with yet another successful week for the Skyhawks. A native of Covington, Tenn., Jones scored 17 points to defeat Belmont on Saturday. Monday night she was back at it again, scoring 15 points against Southeast Missouri in just 20 minutes of play.

This marks the sixth time this season that a Skyhawk has taken home at least one OVC weekly honor. The honor is Butler’s eighth career Player for the Week accolade while serving as Jones’ second consecutive Freshman of the Week accomplishment.

The Skyhawks will be back in action this Saturday, Jan. 18 when they travel to OVC East member Morehead State at 3:15 p.m. Central.
