MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will look to continue its early conference success in 2014 when it travels to Ohio Valley Conference West division rival Murray State on Saturday, Jan. 4. Tip-off from the CFSB Center is schedule for 7 p.m.
The Skyhawks (8-6, 1-0 OVC) are coming off a dominating performance at Jacksonville State to open conference play, winning the team’s first OVC opener on the road since 2001. Led by the play of senior guard Jasmine Newsome, the Skyhawks cruised to an 88-75 victory. Newsome (18.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg) paced the Skyhawks with her second double-double of the season, notching a game-high 25 points while dishing out 11 assists and recording five steals.
Newsome was joined in double figures by Heather Butler (20.5 ppg, 3.8 rpg) who tallied 14 points to continue her streak of double figure performances to 111 straight games. Freshman Tiara Caldwell also joined in the action, tying her previous career-best with 13 points.
Murray State (7-6, 0-1 OVC) head into the matchup fresh off an 86-72 defeat at the hands of Eastern Kentucky. Leading scorer Kelona Kirby (18.7 ppg, 5.2 rpg) led four Racers in double-digits with a team-high 21 points while Jessica Winfrey (9.8 ppg, 10.8 rpg) notched her second consecutive double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Nikia Edom (7.2 ppg, 2.4 rpg) and Taylor Porter (8.9 ppg, 2.2 rpg) rounded out the double-digit Racers with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
UT Martin leads the all-time series between the two schools 41-33, earning victories in seven of the last eight contests. The Skyhawks have not lost at Murray State since Jan. 4, 2010, dropping the 55-47 decision.
