BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference announced today that University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball forward Chelsea Roberts has been named adidas OVC Newcomer of the Week after a solid week of performances.
After starting the first seven games of the season, Roberts has found her niche’ coming off the bench. A native of St. Peters, South Australia, Roberts has tallied eight points or more in three of the last four contests, including a standout performance against No. 20 Florida State.
Against nationally ranked Florida State, it was Roberts who tied a career-high with 10 point while remaining efficient from the field. Roberts made three field goals in just four attempts, including a near-perfect 2-for-3 night from beyond the arc.
In the Skyhawks record setting victory over Southern Illinois, Roberts tossed in another eight points while shooting 3-for-4 from the field while make her only attempt from three-point territory.
Roberts is the first Skyhawk to bring home OVC Newcomer of the Week honors this season and just the first player to garner Newcomer honors since Taylor Hall reached the feat on Dec. 27, 2011. Roberts joins teammates Heather Butler, Jasmine Newsome, Tiara Caldwell and Elizabeth Masengil to be placed on the OVC’s weekly award lists.
Roberts and the Skyhawks will return to tonight when they open conference play at OVC East foe Jacksonville State. Action from Pete Mathews Coliseum is schedule to get underway at 5:15 p.m.
