BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference announced today that University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball guard Jasmine Newsome has been named adidas OVC Co-Player of the Week following her record setting performance against Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon.
A Millington, Tenn. native, Newsome needed just 11 points going into Saturday’s matchup against Quinnipiac in the Preseason Women’s National Invitational Tournament to become UT Martin’s second player to reach the illusive 2,000 point plateau. History would not elude the speedy senior as Newsome tallied her 2,000th career point with a three-pointer at the 6:34 mark of the first half. She now joins teammate Heather Butler as the only two players to reach the mark in school basketball history.
Newsome’s historic night was not done however, as the senior carried her team to an overtime victory behind a UT Martin single-game record 44 point performance, including 15 of the team’s 19 points in the overtime frame. Newsome’s 44 point performance surpasses Butler’s previous record of 42 against Tennessee State on Jan. 30, 2010 on the women’s side. Her record night also tied the school single-game record with Okechi Egbe who scored 44 points against Bethel on Nov. 20, 2000.
Newsome currently ranks second in the OVC in scoring (25.0) while ranking first in assists (7.3) and second in minutes played (36.7).
This award marks the second consecutive week that a Skyhawk has taken home an OVC honor as freshman Tiara Caldwell was tabbed OVC Freshman of the Week last week.
Newsome and the Skyhawks return to action tonight at Arkansas State. Action from the Convocation Center in Jonesboro, Ark. is set for 7:05 p.m.
