MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team concludes the 2013 campaign with a midweek matchup at Southeast Missouri on Tuesday, Nov. 12 and a weekend matchup at Jacksonville State on Saturday, Nov. 16.
The Skyhawks (9-21, 3-11 Ohio Valley Conference) were officially eliminated from OVC tournament contention over the weekend, falling in a pair of 3-2 nailbiters against Austin Peay (24-26, 23-25, 25-16, 25-16, 12-15) and Murray State (17-25, 26-24, 25-16, 13-25, 13-15).
UT Martin will go for the season sweep of Southeast Missouri tomorrow night, as the Skyhawks defeated Southeast Missouri in five sets at home on Oct. 1. Amanda Crask’s triple-double (12 kills, career-high 62 assists, 16 digs) and Madison Wessling’s career-high 17 kills paved the way for the UT Martin offense while Chelsea Bowles (33 digs) and Lynsey Hazelwood (18 digs) both set career-highs in digs to lead the defense.
The Skyhawks will then look to continue their recent success against Jacksonville State on Saturday. UT Martin has won three of the last four overall against the Gamecocks and haven’t lost in Jacksonville since 2010.
Southeast Missouri (15-15, 7-7 OVC) split a pair of matches last weekend, falling in five sets to Murray State (25-21, 14-25, 25-18, 22-25, 10-15) on Friday before sweeping Austin Peay (25-15, 25-20, 25-18) on Saturday. The Redhawks lead the OVC in blocks (2.42 per set) while Emily Coon picked up adidas OVC Offensive Player of the Week honors after hitting .694 with 36 kills in the two matches.
Jacksonville State (11-18, 4-10 OVC) has lost eight straight matches heading into this week. The Gamecocks fell 3-1 in a pair of road matchups at Eastern Illinois (24-26, 22-25, 25-20, 21-25) and at SIU Edwardsville (24-26, 25-18, 17-25, 16-25) last weekend. The Gamecocks are led offensively by Emily Rutherford (324 kills, 3.27 per set) and Abbey Heredia (720 assists, 7.27 per set) while Kelly Cole (448 digs, 4.48 per set) and Nicole Merget (93 blocks, 0.95 per set) guide Jacksonville State defensively.
