BUCHANAN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team sits in second place at 16-under par 560 after two rounds of play at the Skyhawk Classic, while sophomore Tyler Guy of Clarksville, is only one stroke off the individual lead at 7-under-par. The Skyhawks sit behind only Lee University, which carded a stellar 17-under-par second round to claim the lead at 20-under-par 556.

In what is shaping up to be a final round shootout, UT Martin and Lee have a 10-stroke lead over the nearest competition, Murray State and Southern Illinois, which are tied in third at 6-under-par 570.

“It isn’t often that you can shoot 16-under in the first two rounds and not be leading the tournament,” said UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter.

UT Martin opened play with a first round 12-under-par 284 showing to build a 10 stroke lead on the field before Lee posted its second round response. Guy led the way for UT Martin in both rounds with his 69-68-137 day, followed by Tyler Shellnut who posted a pair of 2-under-par 70s and sits in a tie for sixth.

Brendon Caballero finished at 2-under-par 142 on the day, while Austin Swafford came in at even-par 144 and Ben Reeves rounded out the scoring at 1-over-par 145.

“Considering the amount of rain we had Sunday night, the course was in really good shape today,” added Carpenter. “That meant everyone could fire at the hole with confidence and a lot of our guys ended under-par which just shows that we continue to get better.”

“I am certainly proud of our guys and if we make a few more birdies tomorrow and fire at the hole, we can go low again and give ourselves a great chance to win.”

UT Martin’s second team in the tournament, the Orange squad, which was made up of only four players sits in a tie for 10th at 7-over-par 583. The Orange team finished strong, shooting even-par in the second round and is only seven strokes out of the top five.

Peyton Deming led the Orange team in only his second collegiate tournament and sits in a tie for 16th at 1-under-par 143. John Sisinni is only two shots back at 1-over-par 145, while Clay Harbin is at 3-over-par 147 and Gavin Shellnut sits at 4-over-par 148.

Carpenter said of the Orange team that, “I’m really proud of the way they played today and they responded very well in the second round. With both teams playing well, tomorrow could be a great day for the Skyhawks.”

In the individual competition Union University’s Bryce Doughty and Hunter Vest of Lee at tied at 8-under-par 136, with Guy in third, followed by Adam Wright of Lee at 6-under-par 138. Austin Peay’s Tucker Wallace rounds out the top five at 5-under-par 139.
