CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team clashed in a rematch of last year’s Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship match to open conference play at Austin Peay. Much like last year, the home team pulled out the victory as the Skyhawks fell to the Lady Govs 2-1 at Morgan Bros. Soccer Field.
Offensively, UT Martin (2-7-1) was led by freshman Ellie Myrick who tallied her first career goal, the lone goal on Friday evening for the Skyhawks. Junior Alyssa Curtis paced the Skyhawks with three shots, including two shots-on-goal. Aoife Lennon and Amy Maksimowicz also added one shot-on-goal each.
Junior goalkeeper Mariah Klenke registered all 90 minutes in goal for the Skyhawks, tallying three saves while allowing two goals.
Austin Peay landed the first punch of the OVC bout in the 18th minute. Reigning OVC Offensive Player of the Year Tatiana Ariza struck quickly off an assist by Courtney Sheppard. Ariza’s goal was her OVC leading seventh goal of the season.
The Lady Govs weren’t done offensively, adding to their total in the 63rd minute. Austin Peay’s Frankie Carbajal played a ball off a corner kick into the lower right corner of the net. Carbajal’s first goal of the season came off an assist by Claire Pultz.
The Skyhawks would get onto the board at the 82:00 mark off the leg of Myrick. Myrick’s first career goal was a result of a well-placed cross to the top left of the box from senior Hannah McGowen as the freshman rifled the shot from 12 yards out.
UT Martin would seek the equalizer in the final minutes, but Maksimowicz’s shot in the 84th minute would be the Skyhawks final attempt on goal of the game as APSU goalkeeper Haylee Shoaff wrangled the save.
The Skyhawks will look to quickly rebound as they travel to Murray State to close out their current four-game road trip. Action from Cutchin Field is slated to get underway at 1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 29.
