BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Chelsea Bowles and Amanda Crask, both sophomores on the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team, won Ohio Valley Conference weekly honors for the second straight week, the league office announced this afternoon.
Bowles was named adidas OVC Defensive Player of the Week while Crask earned adidas OVC Setter of the Week accolades. The duo has helped the Skyhawks to a 6-2 overall record, which is tied for best eight-match start to a season in the program’s Division-I history.
A 5-4 Louisville, Ky. native, Bowles averaged 5.62 digs over 21 sets of play this past week (118 total digs). She piled up at least 20 digs in four of the team’s five matches this week, beginning her week with a career-high 31-dig effort in a victory over Evansville. After corralling 16 digs in a three-set victory over Charlotte, she concluded the Country Inn and Suites Invitational with 27 digs against UNC Asheville, 21 against Tennessee and 23 at Chattanooga. She now leads the OVC with 176 digs (5.50 per set).
Crask piled up 218 assists (10.38 per set) and 49 kills (2.33 per set) in a total of 21 sets this week. The 5-7 native of Louisville, Ky. nabbed all-tournament accolades at the Country Inn and Suites Invitational over the weekend, saving her best effort for last. She tallied the program’s third-ever triple-double and the second triple-double of her career with a career-high 15 kills, career-high 52 assists and 12 digs in a 3-2 win at Chattanooga. She tallied at least eight kills in all five matches this week, handed out at least 39 assists in four matches and hit over .400 twice (against Charlotte and Tennessee) this week.
UT Martin leads the OVC in assists (427, 13.34 per set, 26th nationally), kills (452, 14.12 per set, 36th nationally) and digs (547, 17.09 per set, 21st nationally). Bowles (13th) and Crask (85th) rank amongst the national individual leaders in digs per set and assists per set, respectively.
The Skyhawks continue play this weekend at the Hampton Inn Bama Bash. UT Martin will take on South Alabama and Arkansas State on Friday, Sept. 13, followed by matchups against Nicholls State and host Alabama on Saturday, Sept. 14.
