NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin cross country team produced a solid start to the 2013 season in the Belmont Opener on Friday evening at Nashville’s Percy Warner Park.
The meet was scored in the dual meet format rather than the traditional format.
The men’s team had four runners among the top-100. They were led by sophomore Justin Morgan who finished 33rd with a 5K time of 16:42.70. Junior Colin Johnson placed 58th (17:12.53), freshman Joey DeSantis placed 81st with a time of 16:49.34. Junior Josiah Roberts rounded out the top-100 finishers for the Skyhawks with a time of 18:29.13, finishing 96th.

On the women’s side, senior Hannah Wolters paced the Skyhawks, finishing 61st with a time of 20:35.59. Wolters was followed closely by sophomore Hayley Doty, placing 69th with a time of 21:22.50. Sophomore Alexandria Stover used a time of 22:05.74 to finish 78th.
Other UT Martin finishers include: sophomore Abby Frantom (82nd, 22:36.54), freshmen Heather Mullis (85th, 23:02.48) and Olivia Owens (86th, 23:09.92) while junior Grace Lucas would round out the evening with a time of 23:38.83, placing 88th.
“The heat and hills made for a rough start but not without some shining moments,” said UT Martin cross country coach Gordon Sanders. “Justin and Colin ran well and frosh Joey DeSantis started the season well. Hannah and Hayley ran solid too. There were no surprises, but I look forward to seeing who will be trading out scoring spots over the next two races.”
The Skyhawk cross country teams will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 14 when they make the trip to Vaughn’s Creek Course at the Commodore Classic.
